Pancakes and Pyjamas

On Pancake Day - Tuesday 24th February, we had the opportunity to make Fair Trade Pancakes. We used fairtrade sugar to make our pancakes and filled them with fairtrade bananas and fairtrade chocolate. We have been learning about Fair Trade products in school and found out that buying them can help people who grow bananas and other crops in different countries get better lives. Fair Trade bananas are also more eco-friendly because they don't use any chemicals or pesticides to grow them.

The panakes were delicious!

Now onto another subject! We had a Pyjama Day on the last day of half term, Friday 13th February. This was to raise money for the school council so that they can listen to children's ideas and buy new equipment for school.

We have really enjoyed looking at the blog for our partner school in St. Lucia - here is a link to the website if you want to have a look too:

Steel Drumming Workshop!

Hi again

We haven't written on our blog for a while, but we now have some interesting news to tell you about.

Today we have had a steel band called 'Boil Up Tropical' come into teach us how to play the steel drums. John was from St. Kitts and Sophia was from Jamaica in the Caribbean. First of all, they did a demonstration to the whole school - we all got up and danced! Then our class all had a go on our own. We learnt how to play different tunes like 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' and 'Everything I Do'. We found out that you don't need to hit the drum very hard to make a good sound, and that you don't need to hold the malletts hard. The notes are made by different sized dents in the drum and they don't go up in order.

We all really enjoyed our morning and we can see why this type of music is so popular in the Caribbean.

Also, last week we tasted lots of different tropical fruits like pineapple, mango and papaya. Most of us really liked all them. As well as this we have learnt about how bananas are grown in St. Lucia and read and performed lots of Caribbean poetry.

Stick insect update!! We now have five and they are growing very quickly!

We will write again soon

Weather in Broseley

We are going to be looking at weather in our town of Broseley in the next couple of weeks. We will collect weather data (temperature and weather type) each day from Monday 19th January for one week.

We have attached a photograph of some of us in the snow we had last week - it was very cold! We have been wondering whether you ever get snow in St. Lucia? If you are able to, it would be really interesting if the children in St. Lucia could collect some weather data for next week too so that we can compare it with our weather?

We will post our weather data on our blog once we have collected it all.

Another exciting thing to happen in our class is that we have had some stick insect eggs and two of them so far have hatched. Do you have stick insects in St. Lucia? Once they have got a little bigger, we will post some photos of them onto our blog of you to see too.

Welcome to our blog!

Welcome everyone to our class blog! We are a year 5 class at a Primary school in Broseley, Shropshire. Our topic for this term is St. Lucia, so we have set up a link with a class in a school in St. Luica. This blog will be for us to tell children there about ourselves and to show them some of our work.

Hello to all of the children in St. Lucia! Here is a photograph of most of our class, we will write in more detail about ourselves next week, and will also email you some questions which we would like you to help us to find out the answers to.

Looking forward to finding out more about you!
